Today was the semi-annual cleaning of the Atwood-Higgins House. Though the 1730 Cape Cod-style house is closed for the year, park employees and volunteers cleaned it in preparation for the winter. Pictured from left to right are: Ashely, Allison, Don, Kathy, Dave, Bruce, and Park Historian Bill Burke. . Today, on this Veterans Day, Cape Cod National Seashore would like to thank all of the veterans on our staff, who continue to serve their nation here at the seashore, and all of their brothers and sisters who served along side of them. Thank you all for your service. See some of the stories of military veterans across the National Park Service at: www.nps.gov/military. . What goes up, must come down. Unfortunately, many of the balloons we release in celebration or just by mistake end up causing problems for wildlife, especially in the marine environment. Sometimes mistaken for food and ingested, and other times trailing ribbons that lead to entanglement, balloons floating free into nature can author stories with unhappy endings. The truck full of balloons seen in this photograph represents just a small fraction of the balloons that end up on Cape Cod National Seashore beaches each summer. The seashore’s Chief of Natural Resources Nita Tallent, seen here with two Shorebird Biotechs, asks people to think more carefully about adding to wildlife woes. . #FindYourPark #NPS101 #WildlifeWoes #WildlifeWednesday #WhatGoesUpMustComeDown [Photo description: Three people wearing green and gray National Park Service uniforms stand over the bed of a white truck. Yesterday was the 51st anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). To celebrate, our two American Conservation Experience Cultural Resources Interns, Allison and Ashley, gave the iconic Highland Light a little love! Starting in late 2018 the tower will get even more love as we invest in significant repairs. . #FindYourPark #NPS101 #Preservation #HugYourHistory. . It's been said that rangers get paid in sunrises and sunsets. True, rangers often work in the planet's most stunning locales. We're also rewarded with smiles and thank you cards from our wonderful visitors and park neighbors. Our youth outreach team recently received this Lorax-inspired thank you collage from a local library. How cool is this? [Image description: A card with an orange and yellow cartoon-like character standing beside palm-type trees, with a thank you greeting.] #thanks #rangerrewards #thelorax #unlesssomeonelikeyoucaresawholeawfullotnothingisgoingtogetbetteritsnot
